uMngeni-uThukela Water wishes to advise residents of eThekwini Municipality of an emergency reduction in bulk water supply following a mechanical failure at the Durban Heights Waterworks.
One of the four shaft pumps supplying raw water to the Durban Heights Waterworks experienced a failure on the morning of Monday, 5 October 2026. The affected pump contributes approximately 24% of the raw water supplied to the plant, while the remaining raw water supply is received via gravity from Nagle Dam and remains fully operational.
As a result of the pump failure, Durban Heights Waterworks is currently experiencing a shortfall of approximately 50 megalitres of water per day. This will temporarily affect the plant’s ability to meet eThekwini Municipality’s full bulk water requirement of approximately 600 megalitres per day.
uMngeni-uThukela Water technical teams are working around the clock to repair the affected infrastructure and restore the additional 50 megalitres per day as soon as possible. Repairs are currently expected to be completed by Thursday, 08 October 2026.
During this period, uMngeni-uThukela Water, in consultation with eThekwini Municipality, will temporarily reduce bulk water supply to some areas to maintain adequate storage levels at Durban Heights Waterworks and manage the available water responsibly.
Residents in affected areas may experience reduced water pressure or intermittent water supply while the repairs are underway.
uMngeni-uThukela Water appeals to residents in the affected areas to use water sparingly and avoid non-essential water use until normal bulk water supply has been restored.
